Iran ranks 2nd in hydroelectricity generation in Middle East

Tehran (ISNA) – Iran ranked 19th in the world, 6th in Asia and 2nd in Middle East in generating hydroelectricity, according to International Hydropower Association.

Total power generated by world’s hydroelectric power plants has reached around 4million megawatt-hour, which avoids the creation of 4billion tone greenhouse gas throughout the world, as International Hydropower Association reported.

Currently, 26.5% of the total energy generated in the world is provided by renewable energy.

Hydroelectric power plants’ share in the whole capacity of Iran’s power plants is 15%.

Exploiting its hydroelectric power plants with 12000 megawatt capacity, Iran is ranked 19th in the world, 6th in Asia and 2nd in Middle East in generating hydroelectricity, according to International Hydropower Association.

Currently, China, Japan, India, Turkey, Vietnam and Iran are the six top Asian countries in term of exploiting hydroelectric power plants.

The international association also named Iran as the 7th country in increasing the capacity of its hydroelectric power plants.
