Land mine blast injures young man in western Iran

Kermanshah, Jan 19 IRNA - Explosion of a landmine remaining from 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war in Shushami, western Iran has injured one person, governor of Shushami said.

Speaking to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) on Friday, Saa'di Mostafa Zadeh said the 19-year-old man, Habib Babajani, hit the military mine and was injured in his left leg.

During the war imposed by Iraq on Iran, 16 million landmines were planted in over 4,200,000 hectare of lands in the Iranian provinces bordering Iraq by the army of the former Ba'athist regime.

Despite the fact that landmine areas have been cleared, explosions of mines and other explosive devices remaining from the war often cause death and injuries.
