Head of the Orumieh Lake Revival Headquarters of West Azarbaijan province Farhad Sarkhosh announced on Monday that the level of Orumieh Lake has increased 67 cm in comparison to the lowest recorded level for the staid period.

He added that 9 centimeter of the water level rise happened in the past 15 days. 

Stating that the area of the lake has now reached 2,219 square kilometers, the official further noted, 'The size of the lake has increased by 375 square kilometers compared to the same period last year.'

He pointed to generous rainfall and release of dams’ water to the lake as the main reason for increasing the level of Orumieh Lake in recent days, and said the rainfall amount was 55% higher than last year.

In the past years, the Orumieh Lake has steadily lost its water finally landing in a state of complete loss of water. In the form of a revival campaign which started in 2011, it is set to reach its normal ecological level within 10 years. The lake has started to decline to dryness since the 2001, and according to international statistics in 2015, it lost about 80% of its water.
