Capital Tehran's cycling mayor in limelight

Tehran, Dec 18, IRNA - The first round-the-clock global news network on Twitter published a clip of Tehran's cycling mayor on Tuesday, calling it unusual and stunning.

TicToc by Bloomberg has tweeted a short clip of the newly-elected Pirouz Hanachi cycling to work in the second Tuesday in a row.

TicToc described as common biking to work in other countries while this is unprecedented in air-polluted and traffic-congested Tehran particularly when done by officials.

According to Tic Tac, the motive behind Hanachi's action is to promote 'car-free Tuesdays' since he considers air pollution and traffic congestion among the major problems faced by people in the capital.

The 'car-free Tuesdays' campaign was mounted in Tehran in 2015 to encourage people dwelling in the capital to choose, at least once a week, other options such as cycling, walking or using public transport instead of driving their own cars.

Since last month, Tehran's new mayor has been taking the subway and the bus as well as cycling; a move which has enjoyed the limelight in domestic and foreign media outlets.
